George Slater
1920 - 2008
At the age of 88, George died February 9, 2008.
He played in the National League for many years at either corner, starting
at first and later, out of necessity, switched to third. He served as
a manager many times. George served six years in the U. S. Navy. He was a
graduate of University of Chicago where he played football with the first
Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger in 1935. (Loran Swanson)
Gordon played ball in the National League until
about 1997. As a manager his skills allowed him or dictated that he
be able to play any position that no one else on the team could or would
play. He was my first manager and after we had exhausted our bull
pen and three pitchers, he called his team together and asked for a
volunteer to be a pitcher. Ten players stepped backward leaving me
alone in front. That is how I became a pitcher. Our
team had a record of 1 and 17 that year and it was one of the most
memorable teams I have ever played on. Gordy was a wonderful person
and loved to win as much as the next person. As a team, we didn't
give him much to get excited about, except for that one win. The team
Gordy managed for several years was Lund Cadillac. He
is survived by his wife Betty. (Loran Swanson)
Lynni Jaress suffered a broken ankle in a practice this
past week. Thoughts and wishes are sent her way for a speedy recovery.
